What is reiki?
Various forms of energy medicine are increasing in popularity, with reiki being one of the most accessible. But what IS reiki? Reiki is a Japanese word that means “universal energy.” Reiki works on the concept that the body is made up of various energies. The practitioner connects with the patient through the “laying of hands” process. By way of this technique, the practitioner is a conduit to shift the energy within a patient for his or her best benefit. This healing technique is extremely successful in combination with other modalities.
The goal of a reiki session is to bring harmony, dissolve stagnation and imbue fresh energy into the body. It is effective in bringing relaxation, detoxification, boosting immunity, relieving pain and stimulating tissue healing. Eastern philosophy sees no disconnect between mind, body and spirit- reiki effectively treats all three as one. This healing style is effective on humans, animals, plants and there are no contraindications to this therapy.
While based of ancient traditions, the most widely practiced form was founded in the early 1920s by Dr. Mikao Usui. The doctor experienced a profound energy healing himself, and wanted to find a way to bring this technique to as many people as possible. Dr. Usui standardized the tradition so that practitioners can be trained to treat and teach, in an attempt to expand the reach of this practice. Thus, the Usui style of reiki was born, and is acknowledged today by major medical institutions such as Johns Hopkins, Roswell Park and Mayo Clinic.
